NANTAHALA OUTDOOR CENTER
‘ONE OF THE BEST OUTFITTERS ON EARTH’
Hear the rush of running water? Smell the piney scent of forest? Feel the burn as you hike the Appalachian Trail? Welcome to Nantahala Outdoor Center, a 500-acre adventure resort in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. Nantahala Outdoor Center is home to one of America’s most popular white water runs — the Nantahala River, an 8-mile stretch of glistening Class II rapids that families can master before splashing through exciting Class III falls.
The largest rafting outfitter in the nation with the most guided trips on eight Southeastern rivers, Nantahala Outdoor Center has produced some of the world’s finest paddlers, including 22 Olympians, two of whom were gold medalists. So it’s no wonder National Geographic Adventure named Nantahala Outdoor Center as One of the Best Outfitters on Earth.
LAND OF THE NOONDAY SUN
Nantahala Outdoor Center's main campus, the Nantahala River Outpost, is located in the Nantahala Gorge on the south side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The word “Nantahala” comes from the Cherokee language, meaning “Land of the Noonday Sun.” In some areas of the steep, narrow gorge, the rays only reach the ground when the sun is “Nun-da-ye-li” or “a noonday sun.” The center also fronts a mile of Fontana Lake.
